Steer Roping

Steer Roping is held in about 60 rodeos a year. Because of the roughness on the steer it is frowned upon by the animal rights activist. It has even been banned in the state of Rhode Island. While very few steers suffer any injuries it is very rough on the animal. This event requires a big strong horse, usually a quarter horse, with enough power to pull the steer off it’s feet. The event traces its roots back to working cowboys who had to doctor steers out on the range.

  1. Whew! Loved the helpful comments as they really set me up to be aware . . . those animals really do look stressed. Just look at the eyes on that horse! While all are impressive shots, the first one of the little boy is my favorite. What a wonderful catch!
