The other day I was at Zanjero Park looking for Burrowing Owls. These birds are about 7 to 10 inches tall with a wingspan of 21 to 24 inches. Burrowing Owls primarily feed on insects and small mammals, but they will also eat reptiles and amphibians. Burrowing Owls hunt while walking or running across the ground and by swooping down from a perch or hover, and they will catch insects from the air. They are an endangered species and their greatest threat is new developments. So various cities are setting up homes for them in the local parks. Planting PVC pipes in the ground for homes and then moving the owls to their new homes the program seems to be working well. With the help of my Sigma 500mm lens I was able to get up close and personal to the owls.
